Trips near Lignano

The Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region rich in cities and towns with a millenarian history, easily reachable from the beach of Lignano Sabbiadoro.

In one hour train you can reach Trieste, a meeting point of different cultures, religions, languages, arts and ethnic groups that in different periods influenced the development of the city.
Near the Austro-Hungarian atmosphere and its typical Viennese style cafes, you will find Roman ruins, a medieval castle, palaces of the eighteenth century and buildings in neoclassical, Art Nouveau and Baroque style.

Not far from Trieste, the beautiful Miramare Castle, love nest of Ferdinand Maximilian of Hapsburg and Charlotte of Belgium, waits for you with its elegance.

Another city to discover is Udine, at the centre of the friulian region and about 60 km far from Lignano Sabbiadoro.

The city offers charming places where the domination of Venice appears in all its greatness, ancient palaces, museums for all tastes, excellent inns where enjoy the “tajut” (glass of wine) and sparkling shopping streets.

Not to forget a visit to the castle on the hill and the masterpieces of Giambattista Tiepolo in the Gallerie del Tiepolo in the Patriarchal Palace.

Half an hour from Udine there is Cividale del Friuli, the ancient Forum Julii from which the whole Friuli region took its name.

Cividale has been the chief town of the Lombard kingdom and the signs of this domination are still visible in its perfectly preserved medieval town. For this reason, since 2011 the city of Cividale is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Listen, then, the legend about the Devil's Bridge (Ponte del Diavolo) that crosses the Natisone river...

If you want to immerse yourself in the charm of a Venetian villa, Villa Manin in Passariano di Codroipo is waiting for you. In half an hour you can reach the residence of the last Doge of the Venetian Republic, and of Napoleon during the negotiations leading to the Campoformido Treaty.

Today the Villa is home to many important art exhibitions and of permanent museums, just like the Museo delle Carrozze (Carriage Museum) and the Armeria (Armoury).

Not far from Lignano you can visit Aquileia, one of the most important ports during Roman times and today one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe: in the early Christian basilica, in fact, there is an amazing mosaic floor of the fourth century, the largest of the Western Europe.

And don't forget about Venice... in only one hour by train you can reach la Serenissima with its ancient history, canals and gondola, bridges, calle and squares.

Enjoy an unforgettable experience just a few kilometres from Lignano Sabbiadoro.
